LOCRI

Locri comes from Locri Epizefiri, Magna Graecia city whose ruins are located in the town of Locri in the town of Portigliola. Locri Epizefiri was the last of the Greek colonies founded on the territory of Calabria. He was famous in antiquity for the particular custom of progeny valid only through the maternal line and for being the first city in 660 BC to adopt a written code of laws, attributed to the mythical legislator Zaleuco that, for every crime, he prescribed specific punishments, thus overcoming the discretion in the rulings of judges, often a source of social discord. Still remains of Locri Epizeferi the archaeological area which is located about 3 km south of the town. The distance from the modern town has allowed almost entirely to preserve the ancient Greek city. Of particular interest is the visit of the archaeological remains of temples, theaters and walls of Magna Graecia's age, and above the visit to Museum "Antiquarian" that exposes archaeological finds of pre-Hellenic, Roman and Magna Graecia ages.

GERACE

Gerace, inserted in the most Beautiful Villages of Italy, still has a setting and a medieval charm. Its name derives from the greek Ierax, sparrow hawk. Legend has it that the inhabitants of the coast, were fleeing from raids by the Saracens in 915, were led by a hawk to the mountains that dominate the area of Locri to the place where they founded Gerace. Located within the National Park of Aspromonte, from its position perched, Gerace has a broad and panoramic view over much of the territory of the Locri area. The city center, especially the old town, is full of churches, historic houses, and rooms, tath once they were houses and workshops dug into the rock. One can see a castle and a splendid cathedral, both of Norman age, as well as numerous buildings of various ages and architectural styles.
